My fascination with nature started when I was a little kid, collecting insects, amphibians, and plants, and trying to understand what made things function. I gravitated towards science courses in high school, and settled on biology as my college major. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Physiology & Neurobiology from the University of Connecticut (Storrs, CT) in 1998. My undergraduate Honors Thesis focused on the effects of serotonin and octopamine on invertebrate neuromuscular signaling in the hermit crab under the mentorship of William D. Chapple, PhD.

Wanting a deeper education into medically relevant bioresearch, I pursued PhD training at the University at Albany in New York. As part of the neuroscience track, my thesis research focused on immunization and single-chain Fv intrabody gene therapies for Huntington’s Disease under the mentorship of Anne Messer, PhD. I completed my PhD in 2004.

I transitioned to the field of breast cancer research in 2004 and pursued postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Carlos L. Arteaga, MD at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (Nashville, TN). My work focused on the elucidation of biological mechanisms of drug resistance in breast cancer and the development of novel therapeutic approaches. I was promoted to Research Assistant Professor in 2009, and to Research Associate Professor in 2010.

I joined the Geisel School of Medicine of Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth Cancer Center (Lebanon, NH) in 2012 as a tenure-track faculty member to launch my independent research laboratory. After rising to the rank of Professor with tenure in 2023, I transitioned to the Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee, WI) in 2023. Below is a summary of the roles in which I have served our scientific community.

2013 – 2023, Scientific Director, Comprehensive Breast Program, Dartmouth Cancer Center
